Apartment spring cleaning tips

As winter comes to an end and spring begins, there are many ways to embrace this time of year, like spending more time outside or opening windows for the first time in months to get a nice breeze. Another way that people can welcome in the new season is by giving their homes a full spring cleaning.

Spring cleaning is a way to become more organized, get rid of clutter, and freshen up your home. From common chores like wiping off your counter tops to more time-consuming activities like changing out the clothes in your closet, there are a variety of tasks you can put on your to-do list.

To make this easier for our residents, we’ve compiled suggestions for cleaning every room in your apartment. This guide will walk you through some effective ways to tidy up all the key spots in your living space to have it looking its best.

Kitchen

Because your kitchen is where you prepare meals and eat, it can be exposed to a high amount of germs and bacteria. Giving this area of your home a light clean on a regular basis is important, but we also suggest a more thorough cleaning at least once a year. Some ways to do this may include:

  • Clearing items out of your pantry and refrigerator
  • Wiping off your countertop space
  • Cleaning the inside and outside of each cabinet
  • Sweeping and mopping the floors
  • Wiping down all appliances

Living Room

Living rooms within our apartments are spacious areas where students can eat, watch TV, study and more. Because a good amount of time may be spent in this room compared to others, it’s important to give this area a full cleaning session. Here are some of our suggestions:

  • Vacuum the carpet and/or rug, moving the furniture to access all areas of the floor
  • Clean out the crevices within each couch
  • Dust off all lamps, curtains and blinds
  • Wipe off all decorations, such as picture frames and books
  • Sanitize any coffee tables or bookcases with cleaning wipes

Bedroom

Another area where students spend a significant amount of time, whether it’s studying or sleeping, is their bedroom. Here are some ways you can ensure that this room is as clean as possible this spring:

  • Wash all sheets and curtains
  • Move spring clothes to your closet, and store winter attire elsewhere
  • Dust, sweep or vacuum the floor
  • Clean out any drawers and get rid of objects or clothes you no longer have a use for
  • Light a candle or incense to make the room smell fresh

Bathroom

From the sink to the bathtub to the toilet, there are many areas within your bathroom that should be sanitized regularly, but spring cleaning is the perfect time to give them the deep clean they’ve been needing. If you’re in need of ways to make these areas cleaner, try out the following ideas:

  • Scrub the bathtub and area around it thoroughly
  • Wipe off the sink and surrounding areas
  • Sweep and mop the floor
  • Take any rugs or mats from the room outside and shake them out
  • Dust off any shelves, curtains, fans or other parts of the room

Tips for Maintaining Your Spring Cleaning

Once you’ve cleaned your entire apartment, it may be difficult to maintain the new cleanliness. Here are some tidbits you can use in your everyday life to keep your living space from getting cluttered:

  • If you live with others, split up the chores with them regularly
  • Pick a time of day where you spend 5-10 minutes tidying up, either right when you wake up or right before you go to bed
  • Break up your cleaning by room, and tackle one room per weekday
  • Put music on and a timer and clean as much as you can during that allotted period (this can be anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes)
